Is distance learning right for me?

Online distance learning courses are not the same as face-to-face courses. Online courses require certain skills and study habits of a student in order to be successful. Think about the following and browse the SHSU Distance Learning pages. What kind of technology do I need?

If you can read this, you probably have the right kind of technology. SHSU recommends the following for online courses:

PC 1Ghz processor, with 512mb RAM, and a 40GB disk.

Macintosh 733 mhz processor, with 512mb RAM, and a 40GB disk.

You should also have Internet and Email access. We recommend Internet Explorer for PC and Safari for Mac.

You may need additional hardware and software for course assignments. Contact the course instructor for details.

Steps to Taking Online Courses

This information is repeated on the front page of the SHSU Distance Learning website. Click the "Back" button on your browser or the link at the bottom of this page.

  1. Prospective students should contact Admissions for university applications. Prospective graduate students should contact Graduate Studies.
  2. Undergraduate students must pass the THEA test before enrollment. Contact the Registrar's office for details.
  3. Upon acceptance, students will need to setup a Computer Account.
  4. Students may register for courses. The Course Identification Number or CID is required in registering online. These numbers are available in the Schedule of Classes and above under Online Opportunities. Blackboard (where online courses are held) requires the username and password received in creating the computer account.
